Brand Frame

Helder Brand Frame

Helder · Brand Strategy and Design Agency, Berlin · 2023

Introduction
One Frame for the Core of a Brand Identity

According to Helder (n.d.-b), the Berlin brand agency built the Brand Frame from 20 years of brand consulting and the methods that had proved most useful in it. The model brings the core elements of a brand identity together in a single view and shows how they relate to one another. In a literal sense, it sets the frame within which the brand communicates and develops (Helder, n.d.-a, "The Elements of the Helder Brand Frame"; n.d.-b). Helder contrasts it with models such as the Golden Circle, the Brand Key or the Brand Wheel, which stress purpose, customer benefits or brand personality. The Brand Frame focuses on the strategic elements that are essential to a strong brand identity and uses a concrete ambition instead of a vision (Helder, n.d.-a, "Frequently Asked Questions"; "Ambition Instead of Vision"). The agency develops each frame with a client in four to six weeks of analysis, a workshop and strategic work (Helder, n.d.-a, "The Brand Frame Process").

The Model

Elements

Definitions follow Helder (n.d.-a), the agency's English page on the model, including its questions and answers. The outer frame of the template also names Design, Story, Tonality and Experience; Helder's model page and template page give no definitions for these four fields. The examples are frames Helder developed with clients, translated from German.

Brand Frame
  • 01

    Competence

Competence is "the value your brand delivers to its target audience" and the way the brand "differentiates itself from competitors" (Helder, n.d.-a, "The Elements of the Helder Brand Frame"). In short, it defines what the brand delivers and to whom (Helder, n.d.-a, "Frequently Asked Questions").

SIDES: The restaurant software company describes its competence as a "comprehensive, modular, growing SaaS system that automates 'monkey work', so that restaurateurs can focus on their core competence: being perfect hosts" (translated) (Helder, n.d.-a, "Brand Frame Examples").
  • 02

    Mission

The mission is the brand promise, written as a simple equation: "the customer's problem plus your brand's solution equals the customer's success" (Helder, n.d.-a, "The Elements of the Helder Brand Frame"). It expresses the value the brand creates for its customers (Helder, n.d.-a, "Frequently Asked Questions").

Benuta: The online rug retailer's mission reads "Quality rugs and home accessories that turn rooms into retreats: for every stage of life, every style, every budget" (translated) (Helder, n.d.-a, "Brand Frame Examples").
  • 03

    Ambition

Helder uses an ambition instead of a vision: "a concrete objective your brand aims to achieve within a defined timeframe" (Helder, n.d.-a, "Ambition Instead of Vision").

SIDES: "By 2025, SIDES will be a key digital transformer of the European restaurant industry" (translated) (Helder, n.d.-a, "Brand Frame Examples").
  • 04

    Brand Values

Brand values are "the principles that shape how your brand delivers on its promise, both internally and externally" (Helder, n.d.-a, "The Elements of the Helder Brand Frame"). They define how the brand behaves (Helder, n.d.-a, "Frequently Asked Questions").

Benuta and SIDES: Benuta's values are diverse, caring and stylish; those of SIDES are collaborative, simple and excellent (translated) (Helder, n.d.-a, "Brand Frame Examples").
  • 05

    Brand Core

The brand core is the brand's "superpower": "the single most distinctive and defining characteristic that sets it apart" (Helder, n.d.-a, "The Elements of the Helder Brand Frame").

Benuta and SIDES: The core of Benuta is "empathetic", the core of SIDES "make it simple" (translated) (Helder, n.d.-a, "Brand Frame Examples").
