Genetic Code of the Brand

Introduction
Brand Success Traced Back to Company Performance
The Institut für Markentechnik Genf (IfM) developed the Genetic Code of the Brand as a management instrument for running brands and companies (IfM, 2014, pp. 1–2). Its starting point: a brand cannot simply be defined on paper. It is the result of specific company performances that customers have experienced in the same way over a long time, and this builds up trust in advance (IfM, 2014, p. 2). The institute sees the brand as a system in which the company's performances are the cause and the "brand energy" stored in the customers is the effect (IfM, 2005, pp. 2–4). The Code makes this link manageable. It records the brand's strongest performances, from the strengths customers notice down to the conditions inside the company that make them possible, and so describes a target state against which decisions can be checked (IfM, 2005, p. 5; 2014, pp. 4, 6). Because a brand has to develop in a self-similar way, the performances are fixed in their structure, not in their present form (IfM, 2014, p. 3).
The Model
Elements
Definitions follow the Institut für Markentechnik (IfM, 2005, pp. 2–5; 2014, pp. 2–4). The four elements are the columns of the figure, read from cause to effect; the German terms of the source follow in brackets. All examples refer to Miele washing machines, the institute's own example (IfM, 2005, p. 5).
From Cause to Effect
01
Cause
The company's performances (Unternehmensleistungen) are the cause (Ursache) of the brand's effect in the market (IfM, 2005, p. 4). They make up the whole performance structure: products and ranges and what stands behind them, such as know-how, development and production, staff, marketing and sales, including control of upstream and downstream stages of value creation (p. 2). The analysis covers all areas and departments, because only together do they cause the brand's success (IfM, 2014, p. 4).
Miele: At the cause end of the chain stand a defined material surface and a 20-year test, which guarantee durable lettering on the controls (IfM, 2005, p. 5).02
Genetic Components
The conditions (Bedingungen) behind each building block, called genetic components (Genetische Komponenten) (IfM, 2005, p. 5). They are the company's causal performances that realise a strength and are worked out over several levels of detail, down to their realisations and prerequisites (Realisierungen und Voraussetzungen) (IfM, 2014, p. 4). Each requirement is described concretely, but only as far as needed, so that the brand keeps room to develop in a self-similar way (p. 3).
Miele: Easy-to-understand controls require that all functions run on "only one knob" and that "words instead of pictograms" describe them. The words must be "in the local language" and stay "easy to read", which in turn requires the right "typeface and size", a defined "material surface" and tests for "durable lettering" (IfM, 2005, p. 5; quotes translated).03
Genetic Building Blocks
The causal success factors of a brand (Genetische Bausteine): its specific strengths, each with a description of its concrete effect in the market (IfM, 2005, p. 5; 2014, p. 4). Together with their components they are the elements of the brand system that have been reproduced over a long time in a self-similar way and so cause the brand's external effect on customers and the public (IfM, 2005, p. 5).
Miele: Easy-to-understand controls are one of the genetic building blocks. Together with others, they make customers experience Miele washing machines as especially easy to use. The figure lists five more: lasts 20 years, high price, excellent service, comfortable handling and sold only with personal advice (IfM, 2005, p. 5).04
Effect
The effect (Wirkung) is the brand energy in the customers (Marken-Energie in der Kundschaft) (IfM, 2005, p. 4): the force with which an established company prevails against competitors in the long run. It builds up as experiences with concrete performances accumulate in the minds of customers, the trade and the public, and it grows the longer a distinctive performance history continues. Customers then hold a "positive prejudice" (Positives Vorurteil), a trust in advance (p. 3).
Miele: Customers experience the washing machines as especially easy to use, which the institute calls the image (IfM, 2005, p. 5).
